Prof. Marta Banach is the president of the Polish Society of Clinical Neurophysiology since 2021. She has previously held the position of the president of the Krakow Branch (2001-2010) and of the Electromyography Section (2006-2015) of the Polish Society. She is head of the Laboratory of Clinical Neurophysiology in the Department of Neurology at Jagiellonian University in Kraków.
During and after medical school, she has completed numerous internships in Europe and the United States. She has participated in neurology and neurophysiology studies in Poland and abroad, including research projects under the supervision of Prof. Lewis P. Rowland from the Neurology Department at Columbia University and Prof. Dale J. Lang from the Neuromuscular Division at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Her main research interests are neuromuscular disorders and neurophysiology. She has authored numerous papers (impact factor of 147. and a Hirsch index of 15.) on polyneuropathies, entrapment neuropathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the therapeutic use of botulinum toxin in neurology, and the clinical and electrophysiological aspects of myotonic dystrophy type 1 and 2. Moreover, she has written 16 chapters in monographs or textbooks and served as an editor in 2.
Prof. Banach is an expert in the use of botulinum toxin for the treatment of neurological conditions, particularly focal dystonia, spasticity, and hypersalivation. She runs national and international workshops on the assessment of the severity of spasticity and botulinum toxin administration. She was the main investigator and national coordinator of several multicenter clinical trials that aimed to improve treatment outcomes in patients with spasticity and dystonia. She has extensive teaching experience; she runs workshops, organizes conferences, supervises doctoral theses, and teaches seminars, classes, and lectures at Jagiellonian University Medical College.
