Olga Politikou graduated from the medical faculty of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her enthusiasm in hand surgery and microsurgery arose after a fellowship in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Polydoro Ernani de São Thiago University Hospital of Florianopolis, Brazil.
In 2012 she started her training in hand surgery in Switzerland and completed among other a three-year residency in the Division of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the University Hospital of Zurich. Parallel with that, she followed studies at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris and obtained the inter-university diploma (DIU) of Hand Surgery and the University Diploma (DU) of Microsurgical Techniques. Since 2019 she is a certified hand surgeon by the European Board of Hand Surgery, while also concluded her doctorate studies at the University of Zurich.
In October 2019 she joined the Clinical Laboratory for Bionic Extremity Reconstruction as a PhD student. Her research field focuses on the effect of cognitive nerve transfers to spastic muscles in stroke patients and the feasibility of bionic reconstruction after regaining volitional control in selected cases. In early 2020, she won the prestigious FESSH/Foundation for Hand Surgery Clinical Research Grant for this project. Since June 2022, she works as attending surgeon in the Department of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the University Hospital of Zurich. In September 2024 she took over the lead for the Division of Hand Surgery.
